Photo Scratch – Lewis Bush (March 2016)
As a photographer it’s easy for your working practices to become quite isolated and secretive, labouring away on projects without really showing them to anyone. Sometimes work hardly sees the light of day until that all important moment when it comes to publication or exhibition to a public audience. For that reason it was great then to have this opportunity to show City of Dust to an engaged audience ahead of exhibiting it on a bigger scale later this summer, as well as having the deadline to work towards getting something finished by.
City of Dust is a bit of an experiment, in terms of concept, in being the first time I’ve worked with newsprint, and in being a weird attempt to make an exhibition which is also a publication and vice versa. This was a great opportunity to test out how this would work, how the newsprint might look on the walls and how readily the narrative would transfer from one medium to the other. The responses from the visitors were really useful, confirming some issues I was worried about, and soothing my concerns about other issues, particularly the print quality of newsprint.
City of Dust will be on show at Westminster Reference Library 11th-23rd July 2016.
