Photo Scratch – 2017 In Review

Thank you so much to everyone who has been part of Photo Scratch in 2017. We can’t quite believe it’s already the end of our second year of running this event. We’ve been amazed and delighted at the level of engagement and enthusiasm we’ve had from all of you and can’t wait to see what the year ahead will bring. The success of Photo Scratch is, for a large part, down to the brilliant, shifting and evolving community of photographers and interested people who turn up each time, so truly thank you!

A recap of the year…

PhotoScratch_BDay_SW_16.01.2017-20

In 2017:

  • We hosted 6 Photo Scratch events including 2 Guest Edits.
  • 42 photographers shared work-in-progress projects at Photo Scratch.
  • Over 500 visitors attended in total.

The Photo Scratch Team

We recently welcomed Producer Sian Hughes to the Photo Scratch team, who brings with her a wealth of experience in arts administration and fundraising. With Sian we have been looking at ways to build new audiences, reach photographers from further afield, organise a mini festival for next year, host a special book edition, and look at ways we can help photographers even more, including possible funding opportunities and exhibitions of completed projects that have grown through Photo Scratch. As you probably already know we, Hanna-Katrina and Phil Le Gal, run Photo Scratch on a voluntary basis, so having Sian join our team and share in the vision we have for Photo Scratch has been a really crucial step to making the event run smoothly and helping us to grow.

We are delighted, also, to officially announce Max Houghton, Senior Lecturer in Photography at the London College of Communication, and Dan Gaba, Picture Editor of The Wall Street Journal, as Photo Scratch Champions. They have both been consistently supportive of Photo Scratch over the last eighteen months, and asking them to champion what we are doing in a more official capacity is our way of saying thank you so much to them for that support, and also utilising their insights and expertise to further broaden the reach of Photo Scratch. We’re so grateful for their support and look forward to working with them both over the year ahead.

Photo Scratch in 2018

In 2018 we will be running Photo Scratch every other month beginning on Monday 15th January at Hotel Elephant. See the Tickets page for details of how to book your free spot.

As ever, if you are interested in sharing a work-in-progress documentary photography project at Photo Scratch, we accept applications on a rolling basis so do get in touch via the Apply page. We rely completely on word-of-mouth so please do tell friends and colleagues who may be interested in what we’re doing.

Photo Scratch Photographers 2017

We are always so thrilled to hear about the many many opportunities, achievements, rising-stars and overall hard graft of so many of the photographers who have been part of Photo Scratch over the last year, making meaningful brilliant work. If you have shown work at Photo Scratch in the past and would like us to share your news on the blog please drop us a line and we’re happy to help. The truth is there have been so so many amazing things going on with everyone we thought we would share, once again, links to everyone who has participated this year. Some truly inspiring work is taking place, and far too much to write up everyone’s news in this post. So, from the 2017 community of Photo Scratch check out:
